On a beautiful fall day, Ryan and Smilla said “I do” surrounded by family, friends, and a whole lot of love. October 11th, 2024 will always be remembered as the day these two brought their unique worlds together—bridging miles between Minnesota and Germany—and embraced every moment, even when unexpected challenges arose. It was a day full of heartwarming surprises, emotional moments, and joyful celebration. The day began at Ryan’s parents' home in Bowlus, MN, where the bridal party gathered to get ready. The girls were treated to hair and makeup by talented artists, while the boys started their preparations with a little twist—Ryan’s dad flew in Nathan, Ryan’s groomsman and brother-in-law, all the way from North Dakota. Nathan had mandatory medical school duties that morning, and to make sure he didn’t miss a moment, Ryan’s dad landed a private plane on the family’s runway—yes, you read that right, runway! It was such a fun surprise to see the plane touch down right next to the house, adding a bit of flair to the already exciting day.

Meanwhile, Smilla was slipping into her wedding gown with her mom and bridesmaids helping every step of the way. Having her family from Germany—her mom, dad, and brother—there to share in the day made everything even more special. Despite the many miles they traveled, the joy of having them present filled the room with warmth. The first look was a moment we had all been eagerly anticipating—Ryan and Smilla seeing each other for the first time on their wedding day. However, this wasn’t your typical first look! A few weeks before the wedding, Ryan ruptured his Achilles tendon and was in a cast, unable to bear weight. But challenges like this couldn’t stop Ryan and Smilla from making the most of their special day. We set Ryan up outside in a beautiful spot near the house, and when Smilla came around the corner looking absolutely stunning, Ryan’s face lit up with love and admiration. Their adorable furry friend, Woody, joined them for some playful and heartwarming photos. Seeing the three of them together, with Woody at the center of their joy, was truly unforgettable. After the first look, everyone made their way to the church just five minutes down the road. This wasn’t just any church—it held deep significance for Ryan’s family. One of the sweetest moments was recreating a cherished photo of Ryan’s grandparents, who had also been married in that very church years ago.

The ceremony was a traditional Catholic mass, honoring Ryan and Smilla’s faith and their commitment to putting God at the center of their marriage. As the couple exchanged vows and rings, the church was filled with love, joy, and a few happy tears. When the priest announced them as Mr. and Mrs. Fussy for the first time, cheers filled the air, and smiles spread across every face in the room. After the ceremony, they exited the church to find a beautiful getaway car waiting for them—Ryan’s grandfather’s vintage vehicle, which has been used by many family members on their wedding days. This meaningful touch made the moment even more special. As they drove down the Old River Road toward the reception, we followed close behind, capturing some stunning drone footage of the happy couple cruising through the countryside. The celebration continued at Riverside Terrace, a picturesque venue nestled along the river. The sun was starting to set, casting a warm golden glow over the water—a perfect backdrop for a few more bridal party and couple portraits. After the hustle and bustle of the ceremony, these quiet moments allowed Ryan and Smilla to soak in the joy of their day.

The bridal party’s energy never faltered—they were ready to celebrate their friends and had everyone laughing as we took photos by the river. Once the sun dipped below the horizon, it was time to head inside for dinner and the reception. As Ryan and Smilla entered the reception hall, they were greeted with cheers and applause. Famous Dave’s catered a delicious dinner featuring BBQ pork and country-roasted chicken—comfort food that fit perfectly with the laid-back, joyful atmosphere of the day. After dinner, the toasts began. Jason, Ryan’s brother and best man, gave a heartfelt speech filled with laughter and memories. Jordyn, the matron of honor, shared sweet stories that perfectly captured the connection Ryan and Smilla share. Ryan’s mom, Lori, added her own special touch, highlighting the homemade wine served at the head table, made from the family’s own plum harvest. She also explained that the wine glasses they used had been passed down for generations, adding even more meaning to the meal. As the evening progressed, Ryan’s dad, Bernie, had a funny surprise in store. Since Ryan had spent weeks on crutches after his Achilles injury, Bernie brought crutches for every groomsman, creating a hilarious photo opportunity that had everyone laughing. Ryan’s injury may not have been ideal, but the love and support from the bridal party turned it into a lighthearted and memorable part of the day. Once dinner wrapped up, it was time to kick off the dancing. Ryan shared a tearful dance with his mom, Lori, as the room looked on with emotion. Seeing a mother dance with her son on his wedding day is always a special moment, but this one felt extra tender, knowing all the love and care that had gone into the day. Next, Smilla danced with her dad, Alexander. Partway through their dance, they invited all the fathers and daughters to join them on the dance floor, creating a heartwarming moment that had everyone smiling. Then it was time for Ryan and Smilla’s first dance as husband and wife. Despite Ryan’s limited mobility, they made it work, moving together with love and joy. Their bridal party soon joined them, kicking off the party with enthusiasm. Young and old alike hit the dance floor, celebrating the night away with moves that had everyone cheering. The dance floor stayed packed all night, with family and friends showing off their best moves and creating memories that would last a lifetime. Outside, the river provided a peaceful retreat for guests who wanted a quiet moment under the stars, while inside, the party continued full force. Ryan’s Achilles injury may have added some unexpected challenges to the day, but it didn’t stop him or Smilla from embracing every moment with joy and gratitude. Their love, along with the unwavering support of their family and friends, made their wedding day an unforgettable celebration. Ryan and Smilla’s wedding was the perfect blend of love, tradition, and personality. From the moment Nathan landed in a private plane to Ryan and Smilla’s heartfelt first look with Woody, every detail of the day reflected their story and the people who mean the most to them. Their wedding wasn’t just about exchanging vows—it was about bringing together two families from across the globe, creating new memories, and celebrating the start of a lifetime together. The night ended just as beautifully as it began, with loved ones gathered around, dancing, laughing, and sending the newlyweds off into the next chapter of their adventure. Congratulations, Ryan and Smilla! Your wedding day was a true reflection of the joy and love you share, and it was an absolute honor to capture every moment. Here’s to a lifetime of happiness and adventure. Cheers to the Fussys! 🎉
